Because the World Needs Carny Art More Than Ever

20 years ago, I maxed out the meager limit on my credit card and booked a strip club-turned-off off Broadway theater in Times Square.

I had no idea what I was doing. But had a ton of faith in my writing, my friends and our audience. I knew if we built it, they would come.

The mission then is the same today; write great parts for women. Assemble an all-female company including director, designers and crew. And produce a show OUR way.

And what is the Carny Girl way? It’s creating in a safe, supportive environment. It’s bearing witness and owning the moment. It’s rising to the occasion. Being bold. Being vulnerable. It means lifting each other up, knowing that transformative art is community.

We’ve been doing this for 20 years. 20 years of full-length productions, short play fests, short film fests, galas, charity events. 20 years of collaboration and celebration. 20 years of sisterhood, motherhood and humanity. 20 years of original art by and about women.

It’s a revolutionary concept, really, especially in 2004: Women are the ones who should write and share the stories of our own lives, history and future. And while progress has been made in the entertainment world and beyond, there is much more work to be done. The phoenix-like rising is just beginning and the world needs Carny Art now more than ever.

Here’s how you can join the movement: Like & Share our pages on social media, make a tax-deductible donation to Carnival Girls Productions | Fundraising by Fractured Atlas and subscribe to our mailing list. Most importantly? See the show, buy the book, cheer us on even if from afar. Carny Girl fans truly are the best. And we couldn't and wouldn't want to do it without you!
